1990-91 Anne Arundel County Wrestling At A Glance

St. Mary's Saints

December 12, 1990

Head coach: Brad Best (second season).

1989-1990 record: 17-2 (MSA B Conference champions).

Top wrestlers: Seniors, Kevin Donnelly (189) and Mac MacWilliams (135); juniors, Don Cipriani (119-125) and Phil MacWilliams (130); sophomore, Danny White (112).

Coach's outlook: "I think we'll be competitive in the (Maryland Scholastic Association) B Conference but I don't think we'll have quite the season we had last year. We lost three guys to graduation, one from a transfer and two just didn't come out. We still have a lot of question marks. We have enough talent to be competitive. Because we have a lot of young kids, we should improve as the season progresses. We'll be strong in the lower weights, and we have (tri-captain Kevin) Donnelly returning at 189 pounds. We can give them (the B Conference) a run for it. I don't worry about records; the only thing I ask of a kid is to give 100 percent, and if they do that, I can live with whatever happens."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: St. Mary's does have a lot of question marks on its roster, but there are also several solid pluses. The Saints return senior heavyweight Kevin Donnelly, who recently finished second in the Annapolis Tournament. Giving the Saints some help in the lower weights will be the MacWilliams brothers, senior Mac and junior Phil. Mac, who was ranked No. 4 last week, has the Curley Invitational title and a third-place finish at Annapolis to his credit. Phil was a runner-up in both tournaments. White and Cipriani should improve as the season progresses, and so should the Saints. If they don't win the MSA B title, they'll come close.
