RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Tom Gugliotta scored a career high 31 points and Rodney Monroe added 27 as North Carolina State outlasted Mount St. Mary's, 114-104, yesterday.
Gugliotta and Monroe scored 16 points in 20-11 run to open the second half and give the Wolfpack a 77-62 lead. The Wolfpack extended the lead to 17 points on a basket by Bryant Feggins with 9:38 left.
The Mount cut the lead to eight, 100-92, on a basket by Steve Kinney with 4:42 left but could get no closer.
Chris Corchiani finished with 19 points, Feggins had 18 and Kevin Thompson has 10 for the Wolfpack. Scott Murphy came off the bench to lead MountSt. Mary's with 19 points. Chris Cavanagh, a 7-foot senior, had a career-high 12 points, including eight in the first half when he created some problems for N.C. State on the inside.
The Wolfpack tried several times to blow the game open in the first half but couldn't shake the pesky Mountaineers and settled for a 57-51 halftime lead.
Gugliotta scored 18 points and Corchiani 13 in the opening half for N.C. State, which twice opened 10 point leads only to see the Mountaineers fight back each time. Murphy had 12 points in the final ten minutes for Mount St. Mary's, including two 3-pointers.
