16.3-miler's Winners Leave Battle For 2nd Striders

December 09, 1990

Dave Berardi overcame early challenges by Jack Peach and Rod Young to win the county Striders Metric Marathon by more than a minute.

A record 600-plus runners competed on a course that was slightly altered from last year's because of construction at the Columbia waterfront.

Berardi took an early lead in the 16.3-mile race, but Young and Peach stayed within striking distance for the first 3.5 miles. Berardi had the race under wraps by the 10-mile mark and cruised to the finish line in 1 hour, 26 minutes, 25 seconds, close to the course record.

The real battle took place between Young and Peach for second place. The two fought each other for the final six miles. Peach pulled ahead on the pedestrian bridge over Route 29 in Columbia and finished nine seconds ahead of Young.

The women's competition also featured the top runner winning by a wide margin with the real race between the second and third place runners.

At the start, Rose Malloy took immediate control of the race and went on to beat her nearest rival by more than nine minutes.

While Malloy cruised to victory in 1:40:26, Susan Cain and Denise Fleenor waged an intense battle for second place. Cain passed Fleenor at the four-mile mark, but Fleenor hung on for the next 12 miles and trailed Cain by only 30 yards as she started over the pedestrian bridge. Fleenor passed the tiring Cain near the finish and placed second with a time of 1:49:50.

The Striders resume their fall series of races at 2 p.m. Sunday at Thunder Hill Elementary School.
