Annapolis Panthers

1990-91 Anne Arundel County Hoops At A Glance

December 07, 1990

Head coach: Teresa Ross (first season)

Assistant: Patty Dages

1989-1990 record: 3-18

Returnees: Seniors Shenell Coates (guard), Carol Ann Monger (forward), Tershia Turner (guard-forward) and Markieta Edwards (forward-center); junior Missy Gordon (guard).

Newcomers: Senior Christine Webb (guard); juniors Lisa Roberts (center), La Tonya Simms (forward), Sharlundra Hunt (forward) and Deidre Downs (forward); sophomore Kai Simms (center).

Coach's outlook: "I'm not very familiar with the competition, but right now I'd say that we'll be a .500 ballclub. That would be a pretty good season for us. Our main purpose right now is to build a solid foundation for the future. We have to get used to running the offense the right way and just getting used to each other on the court. We're not a very good shooting team, so we'll have to make it happen with our fast break. If we can work on the fundamentals, such as boxing out and defense, I think we'll be OK."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Ross has the same problem that her father, former Maryland football coach Bobby Ross, had during the early 1980s -- rebuilding a once-respectable program from the bottom up. Though an unenviable task, she and Dages are headed in the right direction, as evidenced by the Panthers' narrow 35-29 loss to Meade Wednesday. Senior transfers Webb and Roberts should help in the backcourt. The Panthers have a solid chance at bettering last year's mark, but it may take a while before they are regarded as playoff material.
