1990-91 Anne Arundel County Hoops At A Glance

December 07, 1990

Head coach: Pat Chance (15th season)

Assistant: Jan Arnold

1989-1990 record: 18-6, lost to Broadneck in region finals.

Returnees: Seniors Denise Zellers (guard-forward) and Sandy Johnson (guard); juniors Cindy Davenport (forward) and Amy D'Annunzio (guard); sophomores Allison Wentworth (forward), Chris Baer (guard), Stacy Himes (guard), Debbie Dawson (forward) and Lee Ann Lezzer (guard).

Newcomers: Junior Jennifer Schmittle (guard); sophomore Ann Chicorelli (forward).

Coach's outlook: "A realistic goal is to make the playoffs, but we've got a lot of things to work on. We're not at the point now where we were last year when we finished the season. We're starting all over again. We still have a lot of work to do before we're in contention for anything. I don't feel real prepared to start this week. People think we're going to start off like we finished last year. Well, we're not."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: If this is starting over, the ground floor isn't such a bad place. The abundance of young, but experienced, players -- spread nicely over both the front court and backcourt -- and the talented Johnson could produce a region championship, especially with the 4A League minus a dominating team. But certain elements need to fall into place. Johnson must remain both healthy and consistent -- she's an All-County talent prone to occasional subpar outings -- and the frontcourt needs to play physically and effectively, which means more scoring and rebounding than Chance has seen thus far.
