COLLEGE PARK — UMBC holds AU to 23 in 2nd half, romps, 71-53

The University of Maryland Baltimore County (2-2) checked American University (2-4) on 23 second-half points and breezed to a 71-53 victory at the UMBC Fieldhouse last night.

Junior Karyn Swann (Wilde Lake) headed the defensive effort by restricting Felicia Young, AU's top scorer with a 17-point average, to 13 points, and shared the offensive honors with senior Felice Pinkney, as each collected 16 points.

Each side made 21 field goals (UMBC shot 32 percent to 35 for the visitors), but the Retrievers capitalized on more than double the number of personal fouls (27 to 13) to go 19-for-41 to 10-for-13 for AU.

UMBC led for most of second half, using an 18-2 run to break away from a tie at 41 with 13 minutes, 44 seconds left and gain a 59-43 lead in the next six minutes.

Sophomore Sylke Knuppel (Glenelg) had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins (4-3) past Western Maryland (3-4) at the Newton White Athletic Center. Juliane Rolapp added 12 points and four assists. Angie Alfano had 15 points for Western Maryland.

Maryland 101, Temple 36

COLLEGE PARK -- The University of Maryland (4-2), ranked No. 23 in the nation, wasted no time in putting away Temple University (1-3), bolting to a 27-1 lead at Cole Field House. Twelve of the 13 players scored for the winners, headed by sophomore Jessie Hicks, who made all 10 of her field-goal attempts en route to a career-high 25 points.

Senior Mary Barnes, who already has more minutes and points than she had all last year, played 26 minutes, but no other Maryland player went longer than 19. Temple made only three of 23 field-goal attempts in the first half and shot 24 percent for the game.

The Community College of Baltimore (1-2) overtook host Essex CC (0-2) in the second half. Adrian Boatwright had 14 points for CCB, and Karen Popera sparkled for Essex with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
