John R. Friedel

John R. Friedel, 54, a retired chief warrant officer in the Coast Guard, died Monday at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis after a heart attack.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Barranco and Sons funeral establishment, Ritchie Highway and Robinson Road, Severna Park.

Mr. Friedel, who lived in Arnold, was in the Coast Guard from 1953 until 1983 when he retired as commanding officer of an ice cutter, the Chinook, working out of Curtis Bay.

The Baltimore native was a graduate of the Kenwood High School.

He liked bay and surf fishing and was a member of the Sincerity Lodge of the Masons and the Baltimore Forest of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, the former Elizabeth A. Zelechowski; two daughters, Jeaneen E. Mullenhard of Annapolis and Melissa A. Bussard of Windham, N.H.; his father and stepmother, William E. and Joan Friedel of Pasadena; a brother, Andrew K. Friedel of Rosedale; and two grandchildren.
