* ST. FRANCES (20-9): The Panthers won the Catholic League Tournament last season, their second in the league at the varsity level. Three starters are back -- 6-6 senior C Devin Gray (23.5 ppg, 12.3 rpg), 6-3 sophomore G Eric Carroll (18 ppg, 5 rpg) and 6-0 senior G Antoine Wingo. Two transfers -- 5-8 junior G Phil Dixon (Dunbar) and 6-5 junior F Mike Smith (Calvert Hall) -- help make the Panthers contenders for the Catholic League regular-season and tournament titles.

* ST. MARIA GORETTI (10-21): The only returning starter is 5-10 senior G Sean Campras, but 6-5 senior F Chris Peck and 6-1 senior G David Jones also have experience. The only junior is 6-7 C Ken Gardner, a transfer from Mount St. Joseph, who is academically ineligible for the first half of the season. A lot of the key players will be sophomores.
