Special Events Offer The Perfect Holiday Decorations

Just in time to deck your halls, the Union Mills Homestead is having a two-day Poinsettia and Greens Sale.

While making your selections, you can tour the restored Shriver family home.

The historic rooms have been decorated, holiday style, by Alloway Gardens. You also will find gifts galore in the Millers House, also on the grounds.

Organizers promise fresh trees, wreaths and every other natural decorating item you could possibly need. Admission is free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Or, if you are feeling industrious and want to do-it-yourself, drive over to Piney Run. The Nature Center is offering a series of decorating workshops for adults age 16 and older.

Learn to make windowsill decorations, boxwood wreaths and trees, wrapping paper and gift tags. Workshops are scheduled at different times during the day from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

You'll find many other holiday happenings, concerts and bazaars in the county to fill you with the holiday spirit: The Carroll County Education Center has its annual holiday bazaar from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. You will find fresh pine wreaths, wood projects and a white elephant table.

Add a photo to your album when you pose with Santa, for $3. Hear the traditional sounds of the season, too, as several groups perform.

Refreshments will be available. The school is at 495 S. Center St., Westminster. Information: 876-3202.

Rise and shine for breakfast with Santa from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. Snap a photo with the jolly old elf himself.

Pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage are all on the menu. Cost is $3.50 for adults and $3 for children; 2205 Liberty Road, Eldersburg. Information: 795-6333.

Carroll Lutheran Village is selling live greens, too, and more at its Christmas bazaar. You will find crafts, jewelry and cookies. Stay for a home-style lunch, too.

Admission is free. Doors open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 201 St. Mark Way, Activity Room, Westminster. Information: 876-2289.

You still have time for Christmas at the Carroll County Farmers Market.

Gifts, decorations and food are brimming at all the various stalls from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday and Dec. 15.

Admission is free at the Agricultural Center, Smith Avenue, Westminster.

When you tire of bazaaring and shopping, there's more.

The Carroll County Arts Council will present "Treasure Island" by the Children's Theater Association Inc. at 2 p.m. Sunday in the dining area of the new Carroll Community College campus, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster.

The program is free and open to the public. There will be door prizes and treats for all.

Watch your neighbors show off as the Liberty High School Varsity Club sponsors a Community Talent Show. Performers of all ages participate for trophies. Admission is $3 and refreshments will be available.

Take a nostalgic trip back to the '50s and '60s and dance to sounds by Demetri & the Flashbacks from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday. The $12 per person admission includes setups. Bring your own bottles, though.

The dance benefits Mount Airy Fire Co. The band plays at Mount Airy Activities Building, Route 27 and Twin Arch Road. Information: 831-5632.

Union Bridge Fire Co. serves an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Pancake and sausage breakfast with puddin' and hominy are on the menu. Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children. Santa promises a visit, too, at the Fire Hall, Locust Street. Information: 775-7422.

Take a glance of what Christmas is in England. The Winchester Country Inn plans a Merry English Christmas Afternoon with typical British sights, scents and sounds. Henry Reiff provides some music and refreshments are available.
