Severna Park Falcons

1990-91 Anne Arundel County Hoops At A Glance

December 05, 1990

Head coach: Wayne Mook (10th season)

Assistants: Larry Alvis and Dave Bristow

1989-1990 record: 12-11, lost to LaPlata in region quarterfinals.

Returnees: Seniors Darrick Moran (forward), Ilya Chase (forward) and Eric Brown (guard); juniors Scott Brown (guard), Bobby Evans (forward), Matt Glenn (guard) and Colin Harding (forward); sophomore Tim Bowerman (guard).

Newcomers: Seniors John Swain (guard) and Gerald Cager (forward); juniors Rich Riffle (forward) and Kevin Schultz (guard); freshman Ron Green (forward).

Coach's outlook: "We've had three scrimmages and the kids are really picking up the new offense pretty well. It's not easy. This is a complete change. It's going to take quite a while for them to get into a groove. It could be next year or the year after. Right now, I'm looking to get to .500."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Credit Mook for recognizing the need for a change, even if the immediate results aren't favorable. Like any coach, he'll have enough trouble finding replacements for his leading scorer and rebounder -- in this case, Courtney Rocco and Kenny Coates, respectively. Scott Brown, who averaged 12 points a game last year, and Moran may be the answers. Keep an eye on 6-foot-2 freshman Green, a "Wes Unseld-type" who has been strong on the boards during scrimmages and should contribute right away. If the Falcons adapt to the run-and-gun and don't whither, they again should land in the playoffs.
