Metric Marathon measurably larger

RUNNING Notebook

December 04, 1990|By Michael Reeb

Joe Wasserman, the director of Sunday's Metric Marathon in Howard County, is hard pressed to give a single reason for the growth of his run, but he won't argue with success. The size of the field grew by 193 percent in 1989. Sunday's field was an increase of 156 starters over 1989's 527.

Dave Berardi, who won Sunday's 16.3-mile run in 1 hour, 26 RTC minutes, 25 seconds, didn't have to be concerned with any of those numbers, though, as he pulled away from the field at 3 1/2 miles en route to a 1 1/2 -minute victory over second-place finisher Jack Peach.

"I hope to run Huntsville [Alabama marathon] next week, and I wanted to get in a good, hard training run," Berardi, who entered the Metric the morning of the race, said shortly after he crossed the finish line in the parking lot of the Rouse Company headquarters in Columbia. "If I can't get in Huntsville, it'll be a good race to end the year on."

Rose Malloy, 42, won the women's division in 1:40:26.
