Musick keeps Gibbons in tune

Cardinal Gibbons won its own Babe Ruth Classic basketball tournament this weekend. There have been six of them and no team other than Gibbons ever has won.

Saturday's championship had the Crusaders topping Gilman, 100-59. Casey Musick earned Most Valuable Player honors for Gibbons. In two games, Musick shot 19-for-36 from the field, with 17 rebounds, eight assists and 13 steals.

* The Olympic Development Program, under the direction of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association, is holding tryouts for girls, as follows: Under 14 -- Dec. 9, Maryvale Elementary, 9 a.m.-noon; Worthington Elementary, 2-5 p.m.; Under 16 -- Dec. 8, Worthington Elementary, noon-2 p.m., and Dec. 9, Maryvale Elementary, noon-2 p.m.; Under 17 -- Dec. 8, Worthington Elementary, 10 a.m.-noon and Maryvale Elementary, 2-4 p.m.; Under 19 tryouts will be held in the spring. * The Maryland Scholastic Hockey League was to open play today with Calvert Hall meeting Boys' Latin and Gilman testing Hammond. Both games were set for Mount Pleasant, starting at 3:10 and 4:25.

This is the third year for the league that has 14 teams and will wind up Feb. 24 with a championship at the Capital Centre (5 p.m.).
