Minnesota Twins -- Released P Roy Smith (5-10, 4.81 in 1990).

San Diego Padres -- Sold the contract of 3B Eddie Williams to a Japanese team.


Georgia -- Announced resignations of offensive coordinator George Haffner and offensive line coach Joe Hollis.

Southern Mississippi -- Named Jeff Bower, offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and a former quarterback and assistant coach at Southern Mississippi, head football coach.

Vanderbilt -- Relieved football coach Watson Brown (10-45 in five years) of his coaching duties and reassigned him to a fund raising position at the school.


Hartford Whalers -- Recalled D Marc Bergevin from AHL Springfield. Sent C Terry Yake to Springfield.

Track and field The Athletics Congress -- Named Mel Brodt and Les Berman coaches for the U.S. team that will compete in the IAAF world indoor championships. Named Joe Piane men's coach and Brooks Johnson women's coach of the U.S. team for the Pan-American junior championships. Named Clyde Hart men's coach and Jerry Colman women's coach of the U.S. team for a European junior tour. Elected Dr. Evie Dennis and Dr. Leroy Walker IAAF delegates.
