A northwest Baltimore man was being held today in the City Jail after being charged with the beating death of Joseph Edward Highsmith, 36, who was found dead in his Lyndale Avenue home late Thursday night.

Police said Ronald Craig Barksdale, 28, of the 2200 block of Liberty Heights Ave., was arrested at Mercy Medical Center about 5 a.m. Friday while being treated for multiple cuts, bruises and bites that police said were received during a fight with the victim several hours earlier.

After charges of first degree murder and using a weapon with intent to injure, Barksdale was remanded to the City Jail without bail.

Police said Highsmith's body was found about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
