If you're conscious of your cholesterol count and plan your meals around vegetarian main dishes, read no more.

Ann's Open House is in the tradition of a '50s diner with homey artificial flowers in little vases and curtains at the window and a homey sort of service. The specialty is soul food, not fast food.

The daily specialties vary, so call ahead, but you can pretty much count on country favorites such as pig's feet, hog maws, chitterlings, ribs, ham hocks, collard greens and fried chicken.

Everything is homemade and the dishes may not measure up to the home cooking you remember. But you wouldn't be stopping there if you could eat at your grandmom's, would you?

Ann's also has any number of traditional breakfast combinations: waffles, french toast (6 slices, $2.25) omeletes, creamed chip beef -- and grits -- for those of you who believe breakfast is not complete without them.

The sandwich menu is wide and varied with all the combinations of burgers, clubs and subs with generous fillings. The soup of one day on one recent visit was oxtail ($1.25) and very good, thick and hearty.

It's a generous sort of place.
