Named Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Thomas (8 sacks, 22 tackles, 4 forced fumbles) and Minnesota Vikings SS Joey Browner (4 INTs, 27 tackles, 1 sack) Defensive Players of the Month.


AHL -- Named Springfield Indians LW Michel Picard (6 goals, 3 assists in four games) Player of the Week.

Track and field The Athletics Congress -- Presented Harrison Dillard Award, which goes to the outstanding American male athlete in the sprints-hurdles category, to Baylor's Michael Johnson. Others honored: Sheila Hudson, University of California, C.C. Jackson Award as the year's best performer in women's field events; Kenny Harrison, Mizuno Track Club, Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best male athlete in the field event decathlon category; and Joe Falcon, ASICS Tiger Track Club, as the top American male athlete in distance events.
