COLLEGE PARK -- University of Maryland ticket manager Jack Zane said yesterday that the athletic department has sold about 500 of the 15,000 tickets for the Poulan-Weed Eater Independence Bowl game against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 15 in Shreveport, La.

Tickets became available for sale Monday.

Athletic director Andy Geiger said he hopes Maryland sells at least 2,000 to 3,000 tickets ($25 each) to break even in the game, which has a payoff of $600,000 per team.

"I've been impressed about the enthusiasm and excitement thus far," Geiger said. "We've had some companies willing to participate and purchase tickets.

To purchase tickets, call (301) 314-7070 or (800) 462-TERP. If tickets are purchased and buyers cannot or do not want to attend, Maryland officials have worked out a plan in which the tickets would be donated to civic organizations or a military base in or near Shreveport.
