Balto police issue murder warrant for area teen-ager

November 29, 1990

City police have issued a warrant charging a Pimlico-area teen-ager with the slaying of a 19-year-old man who was shot inside the bedroom of his girlfriend's apartment in the 2900 block of Springhill Ave. Tuesday night.

Police said the suspect, Renard Jerome McClain, 19, of the 2400 block of Shirley Ave., was charged in the warrant with first-degree murder and weapons offenses in the death of Sammie Lee Dewitt, 19, of the 3800 block of Park Heights Ave.

Police said at least two other men, whose names were not known, also were being sought in connection with Dewitt's killing.

Three men forced their way into the home and one shot Dewitt in the upper torso with a shotgun, police said.

McClain was identified by people inside the house, police said.

Dewitt, who had been held in the City Jail on an assault charge, was released hours before he was slain when the case against him was dropped.

He was shot about 9:15 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His death was the result of an on-going dispute with a man over the girlfriend, police said.
