Truck driver faulted in 7-vehicle crash

November 28, 1990

An ice cream truck that ran a red light caused a seven-vehicle accident in Rockville yesterday evening, snarling traffic for rush-hour commuters, Montgomery County police said.

The truck, driven by Ngoan Nguyen, 36, of the 12100 block of Selfridge Road, Silver Spring, was traveling south about 5:10 p.m. on Route 355 when it ran a red light at the intersection of Shady Grove Road, police said.

The truck hit a 1985 Nissan Sentra traveling east on Shady Grove Road, then veered across three lanes and hit a Ford Taurus waiting at the light in a northbound lane of Route 355. The Ford then hit three other cars waiting at the light: a 1987 Chrysler New Yorker, a 1986 Pontiac 6000 and a 1984 Chevrolet Citation.

The impact pushed the Citation into a 1978 Pontiac Bonneville behind it. The southbound lanes of Route 355 were closed for an hour as authorities cleaned up the accident.

Five people received minor injuries in the accident. Mr. Nguyen has been charged with failure to stop for a red light and negligent driving.
