Mount women win title, 79-54

EMMITSBURG -- Senior Paula Balakonis scored 16 points and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, as host Mount St. Mary's downed Drexel, 79-54, yesterday in the championship game of the Mount St. Mary's Tournament.

Juniors Zelma Owens and Vanessa Blair each had 15 points, and sophomore Diana Matula had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Leading, 13-12, seven minutes into the game, the Mount went on an 18-0 run over the next 9 minutes, 15 seconds to take control. Owens scored the first five of the run.

After extending its lead to 39-16, Mount St. Mary's held a 39-23 halftime advantage.

Midway through the second half, Owens scored six straight to give the Mount its biggest lead, 59-30, with 12:43 to play.
