Toward a new world order

November 26, 1990|By Neue Zuercher Zeitung (Zurich, Switzerland)

UNDOUBTEDLY the Iraqi regime is intent on diverting the Western public from an initially, generally accepted insight and the resulting willingness for resolute containment of Iraqi arrogance.

By now every diplomatic step conveying to Saddam the illusion that his strategy can succeed is a mistake. [His] room for maneuver for withdrawing from Kuwait out of political insight is getting tight now that even Moscow is not explicitly ruling out the "force option" anymore. And for the President Bush and the U.N. a military resolution of the gulf crisis is becoming increasingly unavoidable as diplomatic options are exhausted.

Travelers in humanity have no right to disavow their great political responsibility in this test case of a new world order.
