SILVER SPRING - Marlon Evans returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and visiting Wootton High (12-0) went on to a 20-7 upset of top-seeded Springbrook (11-1) in a state Class 4A semifinal matchup of two Montgomery County teams yesterday.
Wootton will make its first-state title game appearance Saturday, when it meets Randallstown at Westminster High at 2 p.m.
Springbrook tied the game on a 9-yard touchdown run by Leonard Green, and the game was tied at the half.
But in the third period, Messay Hailemariam scooped up a fumble and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to give Wootton the lead at 14-7, and Geoff Pearce added a 31-yard field goal to make it 17-7.
In the fourth quarter, another 31-yard field goal by Pearce made it 20-7.
Green led all rushers with 22 carries for 164 yards.
Springbrook, which was ranked No.1 in the Washington area by The Washington Post and No. 25 nationally by USA Today, had been in the Class 4A final eight of the past 10 years, winning six titles, including the past two. Springbrook had won 16 straight games.
