David I. Rosen Furniture dealer

November 25, 1990

Private graveside services will take place today for David I. Rosen, a Cockeysville furniture dealer, who died Thursday of cancer at his home in Pikesville. He was 72.

Mr. Rosen established the Cockeysville Furniture Company in 1945 among a strip of antique stores in the 10800 block of York Road. He restored and upholstered furniture for many years before closing the retail shop in 1981.

Mr. Rosen continued his craft in a smaller shop and worked part time as an appraiser for insurance companies. He also pursued a full-time penchant for restoring classic cars and was a member of area antique car clubs.

Mr. Rosen owned two vintage Rolls Royces, a 1919 Model T Ford and a 1931 Chrysler. He displayed them at area car shows, used them to chauffeur wedding parties and occasionally took children in St. Vincent Infants Home for rides.

Born in East Baltimore, Mr. Rosen learned his trade in vocational schools and was a carpenter in the merchant marine during World War II. He returned to Baltimore after the war and married Cranie Higger, also of Baltimore.

The couple later moved to Baltimore County, where Mr. Rosen hTC built a house for his family. The basement of the house served for several years as the meeting place for the suburban Orthodox congregation of Toras Chaim, family members said. The synagogue is now located near the house in the 7500 block of Seven Mile Lane.

Mr. Rosen was a past master of Centre Lodge in Baltimore.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Rosen's survivors include two sons, Daniel J. Rosen and Tevie H. Rosen; a daughter, Shana Rosen, and a brother, Herbert H. Rosen, all of Baltimore County; three sisters, Anne Fisher of Margate, Fla., Jean Stockheim and Rebecca Rosen of Miami Beach, Fla.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, pediatric oncology department.
