The State Of Giving

November 25, 1990|By Michael Davis | Michael Davis,Assistant Managing Editor

Dear Reader:

For the fortunate, Sunday morning means wrap-around bathrobes, a leisurely breakfast and time to leaf through the Sunday paper.

But we hope that amid the comforts of this Sunday morning you will find the time to count your blessings and to question your commitment to giving in our community. How much of yourself and your money are you giving to make our community a better place?

If the answer is not enough, fret not. Starting today, you have the rest of your life to correct the imbalance.

For at the very moment you are enjoying this day of rest, there are citizens walking about with little to eat and wear, citizens incapable of reading the very page your are reading, citizens who had no Thanksgiving and will have no Christmas.

Included in the pages of this special section are some troubling statistics about our low levels of volunteerism in Central Maryland.

We hope that your interest in volunteering is ignited by some of the "Those Who Give" profiles we have spotted throughout this section, people who have created time in their busy lives to give service to others.

If you want to help, we have provided an updated and comprehensive list of volunteer agencies, their phone numbers and contact representatives. This list, which begins on page T5, was compiled by Ellen Hawks, who coordinates the weekly Volunteers page for the Tuesday Evening Sun.

In addition, we have provided a list of agencies for the needy that would gratefully accept a donation during this holiday season.
