November 24, 1990

OWINGS -- Mike Loredo's 40-yard field goal with 26 seconds left in the game lifted visiting McDonough of Charles County over host Northern (Calvert County), 10-7, in a Class 3A state semifinal last night.

The field goal avenged McDonough's (11-1) 39-0 loss to Northern earlier this season.

McDonough scored on its first possession, taking the opening kickoff 70 yards on eight plays. Sherron Gudger, who gained 123 yards on 21 carries, capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run.

With 47 seconds left in the first half, Northern (11-1) came back to tie. Earl Harris scored on a 2-yard run and Steve Padgett kicked the extra point to send both teams into the locker room in a 7-7 tie.

The second half was scoreless when McDonough took over with 2 minutes, 3 seconds left in the game on Northern's 40. McDonough's offense moved the ball 13 yards in consuming 1:37, before Loredo's kick moved McDonough into the state finals.

McDonough will meet C.M. Wright for the Class 3A championship.
