Coppin State, which had won only two of the previous nine meetings, beat the University of Maryland Baltimore County in overtime, 76-72, in the first game of the second annual Big Four Classic at Loyola College's Reitz Arena last night.
Coppin State, a 20-point loser when the two met last season, led most of the way before UMBC rallied to tie the game at 64 and force overtime. For its opening game, each side shot 33 percent from the field, and UMBC missed 21 of 43 free-throw attempts.
Bess Simpson, a senior guard who averaged 13.4 points last season, led three double-figure scorers for Coppin State with 19. Laura Medley, a 6-foot-2 junior center who transferred from Essex Community College, added 14. For UMBC, veterans Angel Webb and Felice Pinkney had 19 points apiece and Webb, 5-11, added 13 rebounds.
