Julia D. Callaway Church organist

November 24, 1990

Services for Julia D. Callaway, retired organist and senior choir director at the John Wesley United Methodist Church, will be held at noon Monday at the church, 3202 W. North Ave.

Mrs. Callaway, who was 96 and lived in West Baltimore for many years, died Wednesday of heart failure at Liberty Medical Center.

She retired about 15 years ago after nearly 30 years on the staff of the church. Earlier, she had played the piano for the Sunday school. After her retirement, she continued to work with music at the church and elsewhere as a volunteer.

Born in Baltimore, the former Julia D. Lawson was a graduate of fTC what are now Douglass High School and Coppin State College. She studied music privately, concentrating on the piano and organ and on church music.

Before joining the church staff, she taught at Carver Vocational-Technical High School.

Her husband, Marse Callaway, was a Republican political leader in Baltimore before his death in 1952.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
