Navy women defeated in Tip-Off final, 67-55

ANNAPOLIS -- The Navy women's basketball team, in early foul trouble and hurt by 27 turnovers, lost yesterday to St. Thomas Aquinas, 67-55, in the championship of the Navy Tip-Off Tournament.

Navy (1-1) was called for 34 fouls and lost four players, including three starters. St. Thomas Aquinas made 26 of 44 free throws.

The Midshipmen trailed, 34-28, at the half and rallied to take the lead five minutes into the second half, but couldn't sustain momentum. Navy committed several costly turnovers and made just 19 of 54 field-goal attempts.

St. Thomas' Schironda Jones, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists.

Angie Dobbs led Navy in scoring for the second straight game with 19 points.

Navy will return to action Nov. 27, playing host to Millersville.
