Bowie's 2-1 overtime victory over Broadneck in the state Class 4A soccer championship on Saturday provided an exciting finish to a day of boys state title games at Old Mill.
Earlier, Brunswick (Class 1A), Atholton (Class 2A) and Oakland Mills (Class 3A) had won state championships by at least three goals.
Byron Pena scored the game-winning goal for Bowie with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in overtime. Broadneck (9-3-4) had scored with 2 minutes, 23 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
Bowie has won four other state titles -- outright in 1978, 1982 and 1986 and shared with Severna Park in 1983.
Malcom Gillian capped off an excellent postseason with three goals and two assists in Oakland Mills' 6-0 win over Franklin on Saturday.
Gillian played a part in 11 of Oakland Mills' 12 postseason goals. He had nine goals and two assists in four playoff games.
The state title was the Scorpions' seventh, the most of any team. It was their third state title under coach Don Shea. Shea also led the Scorpions to state championships in 1986 and 1988. Al Goldstein guided the Scorpions to state titles in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1985.
Atholton senior forward Tony Dedmond said his team was confident it would beat Fallston for the Class 2A state title Saturday. He was right.
Dedmond said he was confident because Wilde Lake had beaten Fallston, 4-1, during the season, and the Raiders had defeated Wilde Lake, 4-0.
Dedmond scored two goals Saturday in a 3-0 win against Fallston.
With Atholton and Oakland Mills winning state titles this year, it marked the 11th straight year that one or more teams from Howard County have won state boys soccer championships.
Brunswick of Frederick County had lost in the first round of the state Class 1A regional playoffs the past three years before defeating Havre de Grace, 4-1, for the title Saturday.
Randy Martin and Pat Darling scored two goals apiece to lead Brunswick.
The Severna Park girls soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 47 games with a 2-1 victory over Oakland Mills in the state Class 3A-4A championship game Saturday at Arundel.
Michelle Cope scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Betsy Anderson, at 7:55 in the second half. Two minutes earlier, the Falcons' Emily Vandergrift scored off a pass from Stephanie Roberts to tie the score at 1.
"I think we played a little tentative during the first half, but when they scored first, that really seemed to pump the girls up," Severna Park coach Joyce Stefancik said. "During the [second] half, I think we played the way we are capable of playing."
In the state Class 1A-2A championship game at Arundel, Middletown beat Patapsco, 2-0.
In state volleyball action at Catonsville Community College Saturday, Glen Burnie and Mount Hebron won the Class 4A and Class 2A state titles, respectively.
Glen Burnie defeated Oxon Hill of Prince George's County, 16-14, 15-9, 15-6. Mount Hebron beat North East of Cecil County, 15-3, 15-5, 15-12.
Northern of Calvert County swept Rockville of Montgomery County to win the Class 3A title and Caroline County's North Caroline won three straight over Williamsport of Washington County for the Class 1A title.
