Son shot, father charged

November 19, 1990

A 52-year-old man was shot in the leg during an argument early today at his Carroll County home, police said.

Lavane Stanford Butler, of the 300 block of Bucher John Road in Union Bridge, was taken to the Shock-Trauma Unit in Baltimore, where he was listed in serious condition with a bullet wound in the right leg.

The victim's father, Wilbur Stanley Butler, 80, of the same address, was arrested at the scene and charged with assault and battery, police said. He was taken to the Carroll County Detention Center and later released on $40,000 bail.

State Police spokesman Chuck Jackson said the shooting occurred about 2:40 a.m. during a heated dispute. Also in the house was a woman, whom police identified as the suspect's wife and victim's mother.

Jackson would not disclose the nature of the argument. He said a .38-caliber pistol believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered at the home.
