Police probing deaths of two near Madonna

November 19, 1990

State Police at the Belair barracks were investigating the shooting deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found early today in the 3700 block of Jarrettsville Pike off Houcks Mill Road, south of Madonna.

Preliminary indications were that the case was murder-suicide brought on by domestic problems, police said.

Sidney Lyle Roberts, 57, and Helen Wallis Roberts, 52, were pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 1 a.m.

Each was found in the front seats of separate automobiles in front of a house, police said. Police believe the man was shot in the chest as he approached the woman's car and crawled back to his car, where he died.

The woman, police said, then placed a .38-caliber pistol to her head and shot herself. Her body was found slumped in the front seat of her car.

The Robertses were recently divorced, and the woman had been living in Timonium, according to investigators.

The bodies were discovered shortly after someone called the 911 emergency number at 12:31 a.m. and reported a shooting. The man and woman were pronounced dead by a deputy Harford County medical examiner, and the bodies were sent to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore.
