Michelle Cope's second-half breakaway goal gave Severna Park (15-0) its third consecutive state Class 3A-4A girls soccer title, as the top-seeded Falcons nipped third-seeded Oakland Mills, 2-1, yesterday at Arundel High School.

Teammate Betsy Anderson assisted on the decisive score at 7:55 in the second half, booting a lead pass past Scorpions defender Mandi Kolste. Cope then proceeeded to draw goalkeeper Jenny Golding (four saves) out from the penalty area, and drilled a shot into the right-side of the net.

Just two minutes earlier, Emily Vandergrift gathered in a pass from Stephanie Roberts, and placed a right-footed shot in the lower right corner of the net, knotting the score at 1-1.

The Scorpions (12-3) took the lead less than three minutes into the second period when junior striker Danette Lemerise rebounded a shot by teammate Kristen Miller. Lemerise's goal was just the shot in the arm that the Falcolns (46-0-1 in the last three years) needed, according to coach Joyce Stefancik.

"I think we played a little tentative during the first half, but when they scored first, that really seemed to pump the girls up. During the [second] half, I think we played the way we are capable of playing," said Stefancik.
