Atkinson Sr. Maintenance mechanic

A Mass of Christian burial for Charles W. Atkinson Sr., retired maintenance mechanic for the Bethlehem Steel Corp., will be offered at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Clare Roman Catholic Church, 700 Myrth Ave.

Mr. Atkinson, who lived in Essex, died Thursday of heart failure at Francis Scott Key Medical Center. He was 69.

He was born in the Rosedale section of Baltimore County and attended public schools. He served in the Navy during World War II and was awarded the American-Victory World War II medal.

He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1985 after 37 years.

Mr. Atkinson was a founding member of St. Clare's and long-time maintenance adviser. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, the Democratic Club and the Ballestone Historical Society. He also enjoyed woodworking.

In addition to his wife of 41 years, the former Margaret Raab, Mr. Atkinson is survived by a daughter, Margaret A. Herrick of Cincinnati; a son, Charles W. Atkinson Jr. of Essex; two brothers, Raymond Atkinson of Dundalk and Otis Atkinson of Middle River; three sisters, Rebecca Myers of Rosedale and Mildred Moran and Elizabeth Atkinson, both of Essex; two grandsons; and a granddaughter.

The family suggests donations to St. Clare's.
