What's New In First Issue

First Issue is a 2-year-old chain of retail boutiques that is a project of the Liz Claiborne Retail Group.

AWhile not designed by Ms. Claiborne, First Issue -- which is both a store and a label sold exclusively at that store -- does reflect Ms. Claiborne's organizational approach to designing.

"Liz has her primary groups, and then her supplemental ones," explains Marni Hochberg, assistant manager of the First Issue store in Lake Forest Mall. "We have our basic pieces -- say, five-pocket denim jeans -- and then we have concept groups which revolve around a specific theme. The basic line is basic pieces that mix and match well with themselves, but can also complement and enhance the pieces in the concept groups."

Every two weeks a new concept or basic group is displayed at the stores. "This week it's Linear Brights," she says, a graphic, color-blocked collection based on the work of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

First Issue designs retail from $38 to $325 and are available in the First Issue store at Lake Forest Mall, Gaithersburg.
