Robert E. Herd Steamship agency chief

Graveside services for Robert E. Herd, retired president of a steamship agency and stevedoring company, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Druid Ridge Cemetery, Old Court Road and Park Heights Avenue.

Mr. Herd, who was 77 and moved to St. Simons Island, Ga., nine years ago, died Oct. 27 of a respiratory illness at a hospital in Brunswick, Ga.

He retired in 1978 as president of Robert C. Herd & Co., which had been started by his father.

Mr. Herd was president of the Steamship Trade Association in 1960 and 1961. He was a former chairman of the Board of Examiners of Maryland Pilots and a former president of the Tupenny Club.

He was honorary Danish consul in Baltimore for 25 years before moving to Georgia and was a member of the Propeller Club. A member of the Hillendale Country Club and the Merchants Club, he also was a Mason who belonged to the York Rite and Boumi Temple.

Born in Baltimore, he was a graduate of the Forest Park High School.

Mr. Herd is survived by his wife, the former Kathryn F. Fangmeyer; a son, Ronald C. Herd of Baltimore; a sister, Helen H. Carroll of Baltimore; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

The family suggested contributions to the American Lung Association.
