New Bowie coach faces big building job

BOWIE -- Tyrone Hart built a winning community college basketball program in 13 years at Montgomery-Takoma Park, but now he faces the task of making Bowie State basketball respectable.

Bowie has gone 21-199 the past eight years, so almost any success will be an improvement. The most wins in any season during that stretch were five, two years ago.

"I'm not afraid of taking a program out of the dark and into the light," says Hart, who accepted the Bowie State job in July. "I've done it before, and experience is a good teacher."

He took Takoma Park to consecutive division titles in the Maryland Junior College Conference the past two seasons, putting up records of 18-4 and 20-5.

Bowie's top holdovers are seniors Brett Givens, a 6-foot-4

forward, and Brian Forbes (Glen Burnie), a 6-6, 250-pound center, plus sophomore guard Chuck Gholston. A year ago, Givens averaged 13 points, five rebounds; Forbes 12 points and a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association-leading 12 rebounds; and Gholston a team-high 19 points, four assists and 44 three-point goals.

Hart brought in eight new players, including five from Maryland JuCo teams, and will stress quickness and defense.
