Japanese Central League -- Announced free-agent OF R.J. Reynolds, with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, signed a $1.3 million, one-year contract with Yokohama Taiyo Whales.

Senior Professional Baseball Association -- Announced Sun City Rays had acquired OF Gene Richards from the San Bernardino Pride for a player to be named.

Atlanta Braves -- Named Chuck LaMar director of scouting and player development. Named Paul Snyder special assistant to the general manager.

Baltimore Orioles -- Signed P Greg Mayberry to Class AAA Rochester contract. Signed C Jeff Gay to Class AA Hagerstown contract.

Boston Red Sox -- Named John McLaren, Toronto Blue Jays third-base coach since 1986, bullpen coach. Named Dick Berardino, bullpen coach the past two seasons, third-base coach.

San Francisco Giants -- Added P Jim Myers, C Craig Colbert and C Scooter Tucker to major-league roster.

Basketball Phoenix Suns -- Waived F Ricky Blanton.

College Connecticut -- Named Jeff Hathaway, assistant athletic director at Maryland, senior associate athletic director.

Franklin & Marshall -- Promoted Becky Lovett (Mount St. Mary's) from acting coach to head women's basketball coach. Named James Gray assistant coach.

Kent State -- Fired football coach Dick Crum after three losing seasons.

Maryland -- Announced national letter-of-intent from Geno Soto, 6-7 forward from Teaneck (N.J.) High School.

Washington -- Announced RB Greg Lewis will miss Saturday's game against Washington State to recover from knee surgery. Announced S Tommie Smith has been suspended for missing class.

Football Cleveland Browns -- Claimed LB Marcus Cotton on waivers from Atlanta Falcons.

Dallas Cowboys -- Released WR Dennis McKinnon. Activated LB Dave Harper from practice roster.

Denver Broncos -- Placed OT Gerald Perry on indefinite leave of absence.

Seattle Seahawks -- Signed free-agent LB Donald Miller.

Washington Redskins -- Placed RB Gerald Riggs (strained arch) and KR Walter Stanley (sprained knee) on injured reserve.
