The American Cancer Society's 14th annual Great American Smokeout is going on today.
The local effort is being coordinated by the Maryland Division of the society.
For the smokeout, smokers are encouraged to set aside their tobacco for 24 hours. The goal is to provide a supportive atmosphere for smokers attempting to give up cigarettes. The cancer society hopes that this year at least one in five of the nation's 50 million smokers will make an attempt to quit.
Last year, 17.9 million smokers were involved in the smokeout nationwide.
