SYDNEY,NOVA SCOTIA — SYDNEY, Nova Scotia -- Shaun Van Allen's goal with 2 minutes, 26 seconds left in the game lifted the Cape Breton Oilers over the Baltimore Skipjacks, 3-2, in American Hockey League action last night.
Van Allen's goal came on a rebound after the Skipjacks defense was unable to clear the puck out of its zone. Oilers defenseman Norm Maciver kept the puck in Baltimore territory, feeding Dan Currie for a shot that Skipjacks goalie Olaf Kolzig saved, but could not hold. Van Allen got control of the puck in front of the goal and slipped it past Kolzig.
Baltimore had tied the game 1:03 before the Van Allen score on a power-play goal by Thomas Sjogren. Alfie Turcotte won a faceoff in Cape Breton's zone and passed the puck to Steve Maltais who found Sjogren open in the right faceoff circle for the goal.
Baltimore went into the game without defensemen Kent Paynter (pulled hamstring) and Rob Mendel (broken ribs), and lost a third member of the defense when Mark Ferner left the ice with an unspecified injury after Van Allen's goal.
