Taylor takes off for repeat win in Turkey Run

It's not often that a local road race draws a women's field as deep as Sunday's sixth annual 5K Turkey Run: Maureen Hall, Maria Pazarentzos, Marge Rosasco, Eleanor Simonsick . . .

"And Gina Porcaccio. I ran against her when she ran for Villanova," former University of Maryland runner Rosalind Taylor said shortly after she had crossed the finish line first in 16 minutes, 21 seconds -- 27 seconds ahead of Porcaccio.

"I needed to run a fast 5K," Taylor, 23, said. "I didn't know the field would be this deep."

Porcaccio, who lives in northern Virginia, and Taylor, who lives in Lanham, joined Pazarentzos (Hagerstown), Rosasco (Fallston) and Baltimoreans Simonsick and Hall for the annual run through Lutherville-Timonium. Taylor won a gift certificate for $200 from Pro-Am Sportswear, as did men's winner Dave Berardi (15:12).

"This is my first good race this season," Taylor said. "I haven't been having very good luck on the roads."

She made up for that Sunday in a race that she had won in 1989 in the same time. Taylor, a 1989 Maryland graduate who ran track and cross country for the Terrapins, is preparing for The Athletics Congress cross country championships in New York in two weeks.

Some will remember Taylor as the last winner of the 10K Human Race, part of the Maryland Marathon Festival in 1989.
