Airlines operating from Baltimore-Washington International Airport improved their on-time performance in September, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation survey.

The on-time departure rate at BWI rose from 85.4 percent in August to 91.1 percent in September. The on-time arrival rate rose from 78 percent in August to 86 percent in September.

Continental Airlines had the best on-time arrival performance in September -- 91.4 percent of its flights arrived at BWI within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Nearly 91 percent of Eastern Airlines flights arrived on time.

USAir, the Arlington, Va.-based airline that has nearly three-quarters of the arrivals at BWI, improved its on-time rate at the airport from 79.5 percent in August to 87.3 percent in September.

Good weather conditions accounted largely for the improved on-time rate, said USAir spokeswoman Susan Young.

Nationally, about 83 percent of USAir's flights arrived on time -- good for a fifth-place ranking among major airlines. America West ranked first among the 12 airlines surveyed; 89.4 percent of its flights arrived on time.

The airlines' overall on-time arrival rate improved from 78.5 percent in August to 84.3 percent in September.
