ANGELO'S CARRYOUT, 3600 Keswick Road. Hours: Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturday noon to midnight and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Phone: 235-2595

It has been said of wines made in the Burgundy district of France that their special taste often comes not from the grapes, but from the various unknown stuff that has found its way into the barrels used for fermentation; in some cases, wines have fermented in them for hundreds of years and who knows what is growing in the oak. No one's complaining.

So maybe the same holds true for pizza ovens. For years, the ones located at 3600 Keswick Road turned out some of the best pies in town for Bella Roma. Now the place is called Angelo's and it is under new management.

It's a bit classier. While the corner of 36th and Keswick has never reminded anyone of the streets of Paris, you can now dine al fresco on a few plastic tables set up under an awning outside. From the right seat, you can catch a glimpse of the Royal Farm store sign just up the street.

Inside, those looming ovens still turn out fine pizzas that start at $4.75 for a small and $6.50 for a large. Indeed, they do their job quite well as the excellent crust is up to Bella Roma's lofty standards. On the toppings, however, Angelo's needs a bit of work. The cheese is fine, but additions -- at a buck apiece -- seem a bit skimpy and less than succulent.
