A masked gunman stole more than $10,000 in cash Monday morning after ambushing Trucker's Inn employees during a bank run, county police said.
Police say the robbery occurred in the Trucker's Inn parking lot about 6:15 a.m. when the robber approached a male security guard and female office worker, who had stepped from the truck stop carrying its receipts in a money bag. The employees, a 40-year-old Severn man and a 35-year-old Severn woman, were on their way to a local bank to deposit the cash. The Inn is in the 7400 block of Assateague Drive.
After brandishing a handgun, the robber forced the pair into their car and drove them about one block away to the corner of Assateague Drive and Oceana Drive, police said.
He then took the money bag from the security guard and dropped off both victims unharmed. After driving to a nearby parking lot, the robber fled on foot into a field, where his clothes were later found, police said.
Police suspect he may have been waiting for an accomplice to drive him from the area, said Sgt. Gary L. Gardner, a county police spokesman.
The masked man was described as a white male, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a stocky build. He was last seen running near the 7900 block of Old Jessup Road, Gardner said.
The 23-acre truck stop, reportedly the largest on the East Coast, services over 8,000 trucks a week. A private security force, which has arrest powers on the property, typically handles security for the bank runs, police said.
Gardner said it appears that the robber staked out the parking lot previously and "got a sense of when" the bank runs were being made.
"It's not common knowledge when they make the deposits," Gardner said.
"This guy knew where to be at the right time."
Trucker's Inn officials refused to comment on the robbery and declined to say whether they are conducting an independent investigation.
The robbery comes on the heels of a successful undercover drug operation at the truck stop last week by county police and truck stop security, in which 11 people were arrested on possession of marijuana charges.
Police are asking anyone with any information about the robbery to call police headquarters at 992-2266, or Metro Crime Stoppers at 276-8888.
