Snappy and elegant are not the words one normally associates with tax experts, but that's how today's Candid Closet personality, Alfred A. Windesheim, was described. Windesheim is the head of the tax department for the Towson accounting firm of Katz, Abosch, Windesheim, Gershman & Freedman, PA. He counts dabbling in the stock market and the garden as his hobbies and is planting 600 bulbs on his nine-acre tree farm.
How would you describe your taste in clothing?
I'm conservative -- I like dark colors. My favorite clothes are blue, pinstripe, Harris tweed and very little plaid. My shirts, always with a 1/4 -inch to a 1/2 -inch cuff showing, are button-down and tab collars and a few have French cuffs. My ties are always very conservative. And since I'm from the John F. Kennedy era and also his admirer, I do not wear hats.
What's the newest thing in your closet?
A navy blue wool suit, with a fleck in it.
What's the oldest thing in your closet?
It's a handmade cable knit blue sweater vest that my mom made for me many years ago.
Do you have a true "standby" that you wear to feel good and look good when you're in doubt?
I have several -- one is an all-season gray pinstripe and the winter standby is a blue dark suit with a hint of a maroon stripe. I generally wear a blue oxford button-down or a coordinated pink or striped shirt. I don't wear white shirts very often.
If you had a chance to have a quiet little dinner with the person you'd most like to meet, who would that be and what would you wear?
I'd wear my gray pin-stripe and I'd love to meet Barbara (I Dream of Jeannie) Eden.
What is your wardrobe weakness?
Sportswear. Since I wear suits most of the time, I tend to buy more sportswear like slacks and open collar shirts.
What's the most expensive item in your closet?
It's either my leather jacket or my cashmere overcoat. I buy clothes out of necessity, not because of their price.
What's the least expensive item in your closet?
I bought several pairs of jeans at a Macy's closeout sale in the young men's department where they were very inexpensive. I wear those around the house or to work in the garden.
What's the wildest outfit you've ever had?
It's a multi-colored, abstract design sport shirt that my father brought me from Hawaii. It's too wild to wear to bed.
What are your favorite accessories?
I like snappy cuff links. Among my collection are a pair made of coal; silver with a Joker's face, Masonic Order links and a pair of rabbit ears from the old Playboy club.
Do you have any shopping tips you'd like to share?
Deal with somebody you know and you will get good service. There's nothing like getting what you want when you want it.
