Specialty Steels plans 2 new furnaces

November 07, 1990

Baltimore Specialty Steels Corp., the local unit of Armco Inc., plans to invest $2.6 million in new furnaces for its factory on East Biddle Street.

Two heat-treating furnaces are to be installed that heat stainless steel bars made at the plant. The bars are heated to strengthen them and to prepare them for further processing.

The plant's existing heat-treating furnaces will remain after the installation of the new ones, said Steve Blake, vice president of administration for the company.

Expanding the heat-treating capacity of the plant will give it more operational flexibility and help it meet quicker delivery schedules.

"It's a major investment," Blake said. Over the past 10 years, the company has invested about $50 million in modernization at the plant, he said.

The project will not result in any increase in employment, which now stands at about 850, he said.

The company expects to begin operating the first of the new furnaces by February and the second by June.
