November 05, 1990

A Mass of Christian burial for Joan Miskimon Bates, a former secretary for Western Electric Co. and Martin Marietta Corp., will be offered at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Middle River.

Mrs. Bates, a Harewood Park resident, died yesterday at Good Samaritan Hospital following a four-year bout with cancer. She was 51.

Mrs. Bates was a Baltimore native and a graduate of Catholic High School. After graduation, she became a secretary for Western Electric, where she worked for 20 years. When the company moved from Baltimore, she went to work at Martin Marietta. She was a secretary in the procurement section of the company's Middle River plant for the past five years.

In May 1986, she married James Bates, and they settled in Baltimore County. She had two children by a previous marriage whom she supported for several years as a single parent by working part-time in addition to her regular job.

She was also a part-owner of a beauty salon in Parkville that she operated with her daughter and mother.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Ken Lowe of Bel Air; a daughter, Linda Waldhauser of Rosedale; her mother, Dorothy Miskimon of Overlea; two brothers, Charles Miskimon of Linthicum and Kirk Miskimon of Bowleys Quarters; four step-children; and a grandson.

The family suggested that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
