At Bryn Mawr School, Maggie Dipentima, Ali Ordonez and Melissa Rolls were named semifinalists in the 1991 Merit Scholarship competition. Erika Eason, Beth Panuska, Katie Pollard, Kirsten Prettyman, Megan Reitz, Cammy Roberson, Meredith van den Beemt and Sara Wilcoxson were commended in the competition. In addition, Ms. Ordonez is a semifinalist in the National Hispanic Scholarship Award Program, and Ms. Eason and Ms. Roberson are semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students.

The children of Samuel and Mabel Gathagan gave a surprise 50th anniversary party for the Pasadena couple Oct. 7. The Gathagans were married Oct. 12, 1940, in Oakland.

Columbia resident Greg May recently wore his cap and gown -- along with a red bulbous nose, yak hair wig and size 36 shoes -- at "The World's Funniest Final Exam," a graduation production of Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus' Clown College in Venice, Fla.

Maryland high school students Dante Brewster, Sherrie Gibbs, Andrew Nestor and Stephanie Wandenberg participated as youth ambassadors in Washington in recognition of National Children's Day.
