No. 10 Lake Clifton tops Mervo, 22-6

November 03, 1990|By Derek Toney

Lake Clifton defensive back Tyrone Coleman's main responsibility yesterday was to shadow Mervo quarterback George Raikes in the Mustangs' option offense, and Coleman did his job well.

Coleman picked off an option pitch by Raikes, and raced 69 yards for a touchdown, sparking the 10th-ranked Lakers to a 22-6 victory over host Mervo. The win, coupled with Northwestern's 40-21 loss to Edmondson yesterday, put the Lakers (7-1, 3-0) in first place in the Maryland Scholastic Association B Conference, Division II.

Lake Clifton, the conference runner-up a year ago, will meet the winner of Division I in the championship game Nov. 17 at Poly.

With the score tied at 6-6, Mervo (4-4, 1-1) moved the ball to the Lakers 25 on the opening possession of the second half. On third-and-five, Raikes took the snap and ran toward the sidelines with teammate Jeffrey Young trailing for the pitch. Raikes was grabbed by a Lake Clifton defender and lost control of the ball. Coleman picked it off and scored.

"I was going straight for the quarterback because he was my assignment," said Coleman, a senior.
