Baseball Atlanta Braves -- Named Dean Taylor assistant general manager. Named bullpen coach Phil Niekro manager at Class AAA Richmond. Added last year's Richmond manager, Jim Beauchamp, to major-league coaching staff. Announced Ned Yost, who managed Class A Sumter last season, will replace Niekro as bullpen coach. Assigned Roy Majtyka, who coached with Braves last season, to minor-league system.

California Angels -- Announced DH Brian Downing and P Greg Minton have filed for free agency.

Chicago Cubs -- Sold OF Marvell Wynne's contract to Hanshin Tigers of Japanese Central League.

Kansas City Royals -- Named Adrian Garrett to replace John Mayberry as hitting coach.

San Diego Padres -- Announced Steve Lubratich would manage Class AA Wichita again.

San Francisco Giants -- Agreed to terms with OF Rick Leach on one-year contract. Declined to exercise C Terry Kennedy's option on 1991 contract.

Seattle Mariners -- Announced Ken Griffey Sr. has filed for free agency.


Cleveland Cavaliers -- Waived F Riley Smith. Placed C Milos Babic on injured list.

Denver Nuggets -- Waived F Randy Allen. Announced Bob Travaglini's retirement as trainer and traveling secretary because health reasons, after 14 seasons.

Houston Rockets -- Waived G Byron Dinkins and G Roy Marble. Placed F Buck Johnson and F Matt Bullard on injured list.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Placed F Irving Thomas on injured list.

New York Knicks -- Placed G John Starks and F Kenny Walker on injured list.

Sacramento Kings -- Signed F/G Ricky Calloway.

Buffalo Sabres -- Recalled D Brad Miller and RW Rob Ray from Rochester (AHL).

Hartford Whalers -- Assigned LW Mikael Andersson to Springfield (AHL).


Baltimore Blast -- Announced M Joe Barger will be lost for two weeks because of stress fracture of right fibula and tibia.
