Baltimore is more of a Northern than a Southern town, according to readers responding to yesterday's "It's Your Call" question. At the same time, the more than 300 callers were fairly evenly split as to whether they viewed the Free State as leaning to the North or South.
Our interest in the North-South question was renewed recently with the week-long Civil War series televised on PBS, along with a companion series produced by Maryland Public Television on Maryland's role in the war: We live south of the Mason-Dixon line, but our state did not join the Confederacy.
Some 181 callers feel that Baltimore is more of a Northern state; 119 callers have a Southern sensibility. As for the state itself, 158 callers think Maryland is Northern while 146 callers look to the South.
"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
